OPA condemns attack on Sirasa Control Rooms 
It has been brought to the notice of the Organisation of Professional Associations of Sri Lanka that the damage caused to one of the Broadcasting Stations of the MTV/MBC in the veer hours of 06th January 2008.

Every citizen of Sri Lanka has a right to know what is happening in the country and it is the prime duty of the Media Institutions to report facts to its viewers immediately. Attacking Media Institutions is not a solution to stop short comings being broadcasted. It is the high time that the Government and the Police Department took immediate action to arrest those who are responsible for the above unfortunate incident.

The Organisation of Professional Associations of Sri Lanka which has always been voicing its concern about the break down of law and order in our Country, condemns this act and hopes that the arm of the law will soon bring to books the perpetrators of such acts.

OPA CONDEMNS  THE ASSASINATION OF LASANTHA WICKRAMATUNGA
The Organisation of Professional Associations of Sri Lanka (OPA) wishes to express its  abhorrence and condemnation of the assassination of Mr. Lasantha Wickramatunga – the Editor of the Sunday Leader.

This event following the recent attack on the MTV Network Station demonstrates the complete breakdown of law and order and the culture of impunity that is prevailing in the country at the present time. The OPA wishes to emphasise that it is the duty of the Government and the law enforcement agencies to safeguard the lives of all citizens what ever their political views are.

Mr. Wickramatunga was a fearless Journalist who excelled in investigative journalism and exposing corruption.

Media freedom is a corner stone of democratic governance and all Sri Lankans must get together to fight this threat to the Media.

The OPA wishes to express deepest sympathies to Mr. Wickramatunga’s family and his fellow journalists  at the Sunday Leader.
